Stanley Koppel was born in New York City in 1911 and studied at the National Academy of Design. He moved to Los Angeles in 1937 working as a union set painter in the film industry. After a union strike he was blackballed from the industry and in 1939 he travelled to Mexico where he studied etching.
After World War II Koppel studied at the Art Students League in New York City and then at the Institute of Design in Chicago. In 1949 moved to San Francisco where he again worked as a union painter. Throughout his career much of his imagery focused on workers and the people of San Francisco.
Stanley Koppel was a founding member of the Graphic Arts Workshop in 1951, an artist’s cooperative, whose members believed that art could and should help create a more just world.
